When you visit us for an examination, our skilled dermatologists may use a dermascope—a specialized tool—to take a closer look at moles and determine whether they are benign (healthy) or irregular. If a mole appears irregular, a biopsy is typically recommended. If it is benign, your dermatologist may recommend one of several removal options.
One common approach is excision, where a surgical blade is carefully used to shave off the mole. With proper technique and expertise, the area usually heals with little to no scarring. In some cases, a deeper excision may be needed, which involves closing the skin with stitches—your dermatologist will let you know if this is required.
Certain types of lesions can also be treated using a precision laser-like device for ablation. This technique targets only the surface cells while preserving the surrounding skin. When performed professionally, healing is fast and scarring is minimal to none.
