Lip filler is one of the most popular non-surgical treatments in the world, and for good reason. In under an hour, it can add soft volume, define your lip border, improve symmetry and hydrate thin or ageing lips. But if it’s your first time, it’s normal to have questions. What does it feel like? How long is the swelling? When will you see the final result?
At Shemirani Beauty Clinic in Markham (Thornhill), Nurse Mina has helped hundreds of clients from Thornhill, Vaughan, Richmond Hill and North York get natural-looking lips. Here’s a clear, step-by-step guide to what you can expect.
What Is Lip Filler?
Lip filler is a soft gel made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance your body already produces to keep skin hydrated and plump. When placed carefully in the lips, it adds volume and shape. Because it’s HA-based, results are temporary and can be dissolved if ever needed, which makes it one of the safest and most flexible aesthetic treatments available.
Before Your Treatment
A little preparation helps reduce swelling and bruising:
- Avoid blood thinners such as aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil and vitamin E for 3 to 5 days, unless prescribed by your doctor
- Skip alcohol for 24 to 48 hours before your appointment
- Plan around events. Book at least 2 weeks before a wedding, photoshoot or holiday so swelling has time to settle
- Tell us about cold sores. If you get them, mention it at consultation, since treatment can sometimes trigger one
During Your Appointment
Your visit starts with a consultation. Nurse Mina will ask about your goals, look at your natural lip shape and facial proportions, and recommend how much product is right for you. Many first-time clients start with a small amount and build gradually.
Next, a topical numbing cream is applied for 10 to 15 minutes. Most lip fillers also contain lidocaine, a local anaesthetic, for extra comfort. The treatment itself usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. Most clients describe the feeling as mild pressure or a quick pinch, not pain.
Right After Treatment
Your lips will look fuller immediately, but they’ll also be swollen, often more on the first day or two. This is completely normal and is not your final result. You may also notice:
- Tenderness or tightness
- Small bruises at injection points
- Slight unevenness while swelling settles
Aftercare Tips
- Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas and hot yoga for 24 to 48 hours
- Skip alcohol for 24 hours
- Don’t press, massage or kiss firmly for the first day unless advised
- Use a cold compress wrapped in a cloth to ease swelling
- Sleep with your head slightly raised the first night
- Stay hydrated, since HA attracts water and hydration supports results
When Will I See the Final Result?
Most swelling goes down within 3 to 5 days. Your final result settles in about 2 weeks, once the filler integrates with your tissue. This is why we recommend a follow-up check if you’d like to fine-tune shape or symmetry.
How Long Does Lip Filler Last?
Lip filler typically lasts 6 to 12 months. Longevity depends on the product, your metabolism, lifestyle and how much movement your lips make. Many clients find that with regular maintenance, results last a little longer over time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does lip filler hurt?
Most clients find it very tolerable thanks to numbing cream and lidocaine in the filler. You’ll feel pressure and brief pinches.
Will my lips look fake?
Not when done conservatively by an experienced injector. Nurse Mina focuses on natural proportions and enhancing your own shape, never an overfilled look.
Can lip filler be reversed?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if needed.
How much filler do I need?
It depends on your goals and natural lips. Many first-time clients start with 0.5 to 1 ml and build gradually.
Can I go back to work the same day?
Yes, most clients return to normal activities right away. Just expect some swelling for a few days.
